  MUMTAZ nasceu e vive em Lisboa. Até 2005 chamava-se Andrea Martha. Fez o curso de Artes do Fogo e, frequentou o Atelier Livre na Escola Secundária António Arroio. Em 1994 termina o curso Avançado de Desenho no AR.CO. O seu trabalho neste período tem como base o desenho e diferentes formas de o visualizar, projecto SINGER, instrumento inédito de som e imagem, festival de Musica Viva, Teatro São Luiz, Lisboa 1995.
No mesmo ano inicia um mestrado em Fine Arts, na School of the Art Institute of Chicago, U.S.A., como bolseira da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian.
Durante a fase americana,  investiga especialmente a Performance e a sua relação com as Artes Plásticas, mantém estreita colaboração com a artista iraniana Laleh Khorramian, trabalha ainda como figurinista e directora de arte em projectos experimentais no teatro e no cinema. Após terminar o mestrado evita o circuito das galerias de arte comerciais e os seus ditames, atitude que mantém até à data, passando a fazer parte do seu processo criativo a procura de outras formas e locais de exposição. Em 2002 regressa a Lisboa , colabora com o poeta António Poppe, escrevem o poema “O Agitador e a Corrente“, fazem uma pequena edição de autor e várias leituras publicas em Lisboa. Em 2005 muda de nome e, faz o seu primeiro filme de animação PÃO (stop motion 6min.40 seg.), filmado integralmente no seu apartamento e, sem nenhum orçamento. O recurso a materiais pobres e formas auto suficientes de produção são uma constante na sua obra. PÃO foi projectado em vários festivais de cinema na Europa, nomeadamente em Paris no festival Paris Tout Court e, na mostra La Alternativa Independente no MACBA, Barcelona 2007. Em 2008 faz a exposição WHAT IS MONEY? um show quase retrospectivo, num espaço vago no centro de Lisboa. Em 2009 produz uma série de peças áudio, semanalmente para a Radio Zero. Estas mesmas peças de rádio apresenta-as numa instalação áudio no Teatro da Trindade, STILL, Round the Corner, Lisboa 2009, a convite de Margarida Mendes. Volta a usar este mesmo formato de exposição em Buenos Aires, CAMBIO na Residencia Corazon em Outubro do ano passado. Desde 2002 colabora com o músico e plantador de árvores Peter Bastiaan, em variadíssimos projectos, nomeadamente na criação e implementação de conceitos.
 

MUMTAZ was born and lives in Lisbon. Until 2005 she was called Andrea Martha, she studied Visual Arts since early age in secondary school António Arroio, and later in AR.CO where she did the Advanced Course in Drawing. Her work during this period uses manely drawing and different ways of visualizing it, project SINGER, original sound and image instrument, Festival Musica Viva, Teatro São Luiz, Lisboa 1995. In the same year she starts a Masters in Visual Arts, in the School of the Art institute of Chicago, U.S.A., with a grant from Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian.
During this american period, she investigates specially the relation of Performance and the Visual Arts, she maintains a close collaboration with the Iranian artist Lalleh Khorramian, works as Art Director and Costume Designer for experimental projects in Cinema and Theater. After finishing her Masters, she avoids the circuit of commercial Art galleries and their requisites, position that she maintains until this date, by then she starts to include in her creative process the search of other ways and places for showing work. In 2002 she returns to Lisbon, collaborates with the poet António Poppe and they write the poem THE AGITATOR AND THE CHAIN, they made a small author edition and made several public readings in Lisbon. In 2005 she changes her name and makes her first animation film PÃO (stop motion 6min. 40 sec.), all filmed in her apartment with no budget. The use of poor materials and sef suficient ways of production, are a constant in all her work. PÃO was projected in many festivals in Europe, namely in Paris, Festival Paris Tout Court, and in the MACBA, Festival La Alternativa Independente, Barcelona 2007. In the same year makes the show WHAT IS MONEY?, almost retrospective, in a empty space down town Lisbon. In 2009 creates a series of audio pieces for Radio Zero, this same pieces are played in the installation  STILL, in Round the Corner, curated by Margarida Mendes, Teatro Trindade, Lisboa. MUMTAZ goes back to audio installation with the show CAMBIO, Residencia Corazon, Buenos Aires, October 2009. Since 2002 she collaborates with the dutch musician and tree planter Peter Bastiaan, in a large variety of projects, mainly the creation and implementation of concepts.
